Dear 5th grade students,
I just want to thank the one of you that had lice. Ever since I had to send home a note to all families yesterday about what to do and how to treat lice if your child should get it, my head has been itching!
I am completely paranoid about things like lice and bedbugs, and now I am hoping/praying/wishing/pleading that you really are free and clear since there are no students absent today (or...
laughlaughtillyoucry asked: Hi Lindsey!
I love your blog and very much enjoy reading it! I am currently attending teachers college so it's fun/neat to get to see some of your teaching-related posts too.
So, with that being said, I have a favour to ask you (and I won't be offended if you completely ignore it lol). I have an interview on Friday for a teaching position and I wondered if you have any...

Your hair is pretty and looks like my sister’s American Girl doll.
– Carly, a second grader that I was helping with homework
Dolls are huge to 2nd graders so I felt pretty special! If all compliments could be as cute and simple as this! It made my afternoon!

Wednesday Confession
Matt and I have a plan.
It is a plan that deals with when we would like to get pregnant. In an ideal world we would like to have our child be born in April or May. The reason for this is to maximize my time at home. Since I am a teacher and am fortunate enough to still have a summer vacation, this seemed like a really great time to use to the fullest.
So if that is the case, we would really...

Email I just received:
I got this forwarded email from my principal this morning, in which she added,
Okay—someone please explain this to me!
So, here is what the email said:
This year we will experience 4 unusual dates…. 1/1/11, 1/11/11, 11/1/11, 11/11/11 ……… NOW go figure this out…. take the last 2 digits of the year you were born plus the age you will be this year and it WILL...

Sometimes I have to force myself to grade.
ohmuffins:
snixie:
COME on, you can do it! You can do it! You can do it!
I need some Eye of the Tiger up in here.
I absolutely love every single thing about teaching — except for grading [oh, and paper work. oh, and standardized testing. oh, and calling parents.] Okay, I lied. Maybe I just love the VERB: teaching [the act of doing it; not all that side stuff.]
Also: Grading is...
Heading to my first ever crab feed tonight.
It’s to support the school I work for.
A lot of my students’s parents will be there.
There will be alcohol there as well.
Hopefully things will go smoothly and I can enjoy the evening without having to talk shop!

Thing I loved this week:
the new judges on American Idol last night…especially Steven Tyler! He is crazy and I love it!
Thing I hate:
the fact that The Bachelor does not put the girls’s ages on anymore!! Lame!

SF Ladies Night
Now, don’t go thinkin all these crazy things about a girl’s trip to SF. We headed to the city for an apartment-warming party for a friend of Ellen’s. Since last weekend was Ellen’s last here in NorCal, Alice and I thought that we should tag along and make a real trip out of it!
After an endless wait in a Starbucks drive-thru and a quick jaunt across the bridge, we found...

My most favorite thing to wear is sweats.
Just about everyday (when weather appropriate) when I get home from work I put on sweat pants, a sports bra, t-shirt, and a sweatshirt. This is the outfit I would wear every day, all day if I could!
Don’t get me wrong, I love to dress up and get fancy too, but if I had to pick, the sweatpants would most definitely win!

Vegas (Mini) Vacation
A little over a week later (which I think is a pretty good turn around for me) I am finally getting around to post some pictures from Matt and my trip to Vegas!
One of the best parts of our trip to Vegas was being able to spend some time with my best friend since my freshman year of high school, Lindsey (yes, we have the same name and it’s even spelled the same too)!!
The first night we...

Things that make me feel old:
when I sit on the floor too long my hips hurt and it takes me a really long time to straighten out when I try to move or adjust!
Or when I sit on the couch with my legs bent and my knees get sore!

Things that make me feel young:
being asked to chaperone the upcoming 8th grade dance because I am one of the “cool” teachers!

Dear Ricky,
I thought that you were absolutely hilarious last night. Award shows tend to get boring, but not last night! Despite what the critics and the HFPA have to say about your job as host, I think you were great! I anxiously awaited the next time you would appear onstage with some witty and biting intro! You made the show and I would definitely love to see you back again! Job well...

Lyrically Challenged
Scene: Having a drink at a bar with friends on Friday night while Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean" is playing
Matt (singing): Janie's not my son...
Me: What did you say?
Matt: I was singing.
Me: I know, but what were you singing?
Matt: Janie's not my son.
Me: That's not the way it goes.
Matt: Yes it is.
Me: No, it's "The kid is not my son"
Matt: No way....really?
Me: Yes.
Matt: Huh.

Tumblr Thanks
On Wednesday I posted about how we are going to try to get pregnant this year, and I am extremely touched by those of you who commented and “liked” it!
I don’t know if I am tumblr-challenged or if it doesn’t exist, but I wanted to comment back to those people and I don’t know how to do it without posting it for the world (well, small amount of people in the world...

Thing I am lovin' at the end of this week:
Starbucks Friday! (I only let myself go to Starbuck once a week, on Friday, so every Friday has a little cup of pleasure to start it off with!)
Making a new dish for the first time last night: tilapia tacos! They were so delicious and really easy, I impressed myself! I am not very creative in the kitchen, but last night I went off the cuff and tried something new without a recipe!

If you have not been watching Saturday Night Live this season then you probably haven’t been fortunate enough to see my new favorite recurring bit…The Miley Cyrus Show!

Wednesday Confession
As I mentioned in an earlier post to kick off this year, we have decided that 2011 is the year that Matt and I try to start our own family!
Even though it is about 6 months before we start trying, I am already filled with questions!
The most requiring question that I think about/feel is: am I really ready? I know that I am, and the way that Matt talks about it and gets excited about things, I...

I know it's late, buuuut...
since I just figured out how to get pictures off the new camera, I wanted to share a few from New Year’s Eve!!
Me and the ladies!
Matt and I with some New Year’s bubbly!
Who says that girls want all the attention??
Tooting my own horn (haha)!!
It was a great first celebration of 2011…full of glitter, bubbly, good friends, and fun!
icorianne asked: I'm starting an informal "Tumblr Book Club" and wanted to know if you'd be interested?? :) Let me know what you think!

Teacher Pride
A student came up to me today, with a big smile on his face, to show me that he found one of our new vocabulary words in his free reading book! And since he had looked up the definition for homework last night, he knew what it meant…and was excited about it!
The little joys and victories are what keep me (and I’m sure most other teachers) coming back day after day!

Note to self:
If you are ever wanting to spend a crazy/fun weekend somewhere with your friends, do NOT be the first one to book your hotel and airfare!
Not that it is a bad thing to spend a weekend out-of-town alone with your husband, but if you were hoping for a big, party-it-up kind of weekend to celebrate your last bit of time without kids, do NOT book first! :)
I am excited about having time away with...

Dear Target,
I understand that those in the retail game need to get a head start on the upcoming season/holiday but I firmly believe that January 6 is waaaaay too early to have bathing suits out!
Is it really necessary to have bathing suits on display this soon after the Thanksgiving/Christmas eating binges that so many of us have gone on? When so many bodies have not seen the sun in too many months?

After a day full of meetings, it is time to really get back to the real world…my students come back tomorrow.
I have made a new seating chart, written a letter to the parents describing my new behavior plan, and have a stack of corrected work to pass back tomorrow (admittedly not all of the work is corrected because, hey, I need a vacation too!!!).
I am optimistic that the rest of this...

New year, new things
The hubs and I had Indian food tonight for the first time ever…and I kinda liked it!
We did not venture out on our own, but were joining family and friends for a celebration dinner, which was great because if I would have gone alone I would have had NO IDEA what to order!
So Matt and my horizons have been officially broadened, and we may have found a new restaurant to visit from time to...
